The second hand on my watch had become loose. It was moving around under the glass and every once in a while got stuck with the hour and minute hands and stopped the passage of time completely. I like to support local businesses, so I first went to a watch shop not far from here. That guy sells Expensive Designer Watches and apparently was very busy. He recommended a clocksmiths’ workshop on Hämeentie. He said I could get my watch fixed for 10-20 euros over there, best value for my money, he said. I checked my trip planner. 3.2 km. I decided to walk. It took me about 45 minutes and it cost me five euro to get my watch fixed. As I was already that far north I decided to help the itch under my fingernails. I headed towards Alku ja Juuri (The Root of All, approximately), a shop with seeds and gardening utensils, literature, dish towels, friendly fertilizers and pesticides, bulbs, etc. Trip planner: 2.6 km. I bought tomato seeds and cucumber seeds. I like to try out things on my balcony. They both need a lot of water, so I’m taking a risk, as I will be spending time in the country. The lady in the shop said big flower pots with water reservoirs would probably solve this challenge. I’ve never grown cucumbers before. By this time I needed something to eat and went to a café at the far corner of the same block. I used to live in this area in the 1970’s and 1980’s. I spent good many hours in the library opposite the café, reading for exams. Walking in the city is interesting. Buildings you’ve never seen, shops you don’t know about. Areas you seldom move in even when driving. Or seldom pay any attention to when driving through. Then I see a bus stop I’ve often passed on the bus and feel surprised I’ve walked so far. That beautiful wall designed by Oiva Toikka belongs to Perhon proffa, the auxiliary building of the Perho Culinary, Tourism and Business College.
Lapinlahdenkatu is where my father's family lived for many years. The building is the one right after the pink one.
