This, my friends, is what the perfect springwinter day looks like. Not a cloud in sight, temperature somewhere well below freezing, zillions of little diamonds on the snow. They are elusive, very difficult to catch on film. Well, ”film”. The cold period has now been long enough for the sea to have frozen properly, thick enough to carry walkers and skiiers safely. When is the previous time this happened? We've had snow, yes; cold spells, yes. But the sea hasn't frozen properly for a very long time. I remember a winter some twenty years ago, walking on ice right next to Seurasaari with my parents. There are less currents around Seurasaari, so walking there is probably safer than here where there are islands and straits between islands and currents I’m unaware of. I’m not familiar with this area. A couple skiied past me, just as fascinated by this weather. The man said it’s thirty years since the previous time you could enjoy skiing on ice like this. I sat on a big stone (dot on map) (view above) on the southern shore of Iso Vasikkasaari, an island I haven’t been to before, listening, only a distant hum of something, somewhere. I was thinking of walking on and I probably could have but decided not to. I might get lost? I might need mod cons? In the summer there are scheduled boats that go from island to island, several times a day. I’ve done the round twice. Come summer maybe I’ll hop off on one of the islands further out until the next boat comes. Enjoy the hot cliffs, maybe even a swim, and a nice picnic lunch.
